Every year on August 7, we pause to recognize the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the price they paid in service to something greater than themselves.
We often thank them for their service.
We attend ceremonies.
We see photographs from decades ago.
But there is one thing that too often disappears with time.
Their stories.
A Purple Heart tells us that someone was wounded in combat. It does not tell us what they were thinking when they received the news they were deploying. It doesn’t explain what life was like before the battlefield, what happened afterward, or what wisdom they carried for the rest of their lives.
